A Sail in a Windstorm

We could smell smoke in San Dimas this evening as we raked leaves and uprighted potted plants.

We have a canvas sail in the backyard, a triangular piece of cloth tied in two places to the patio cover and in a third to a cord cleat on the fence like the cleats you might find on a sailboat. During this morning’s windstorm, the rope holding the sail to the fence broke, not at the cleat, but right in the middle, and the sail wrapped around itself several times.  I wish I had seen it live, but alas! No Ring camera on the North side.

I was Roommate-directed to that side of the yard early this evening to sweep for leaves and fruit that had fallen from the pineapple guava during the morning gales, but I examined the sail first, since I had been looking at it from the kitchen window all afternoon.

“That sail is not going to unwrap itself,” I thought.

Fortunately, I know how to tie a square knot.

Roommate came into the study during MNF and asked nicely if I could get up early tomorrow and help unwrap the sail and see if it can be repaired, or if we could get it into the bin before the trash truck comes by in the morning and then put up the spare sail she has in the garage, so now at least I know she has stopped inspecting my work area after I go inside.
